IMU Junior Research Fellow Recruitment 2026: 1 Post, Rs. 37,000 + HRA — Apply Online by 6 December

The Indian Maritime University (IMU), Chennai, has advertised one Junior Research Fellow (JRF) post in a Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways funded project on carbon-fibre composite hulls for deep-sea submersibles. The fellowship pays Rs. 37,000 per month plus HRA in the first two years, rising to Rs. 42,000 plus HRA in the third year, and the last date to apply is 6 December 2026. Applications go through a Google form — there is no application fee mentioned in the notification.

This is not a generic JRF opening. The project is titled “Design and Safety Evaluation of Carbon Fiber Composite Hull for Deep Sea Submersibles and Ocean Structures”, and it sits at the intersection of ocean engineering, composite materials and computational mechanics. A hull that must survive deep-sea pressure has to be strong and light at the same time, which is exactly why carbon-fibre composites are used — and why the notification asks specifically for hands-on experience with ABAQUS composite modelling, fracture models and nonlinear buckling simulations. For a mechanical, ocean or aerospace engineer who already works with finite element methods, this is a rare chance to put those skills on a real deep-sea structure; for a fresh graduate with no FEM or ABAQUS exposure, the shortlist will be a hard climb.

Who Can Apply: Degree Plus the ABAQUS Edge

The essential qualification is a B.E./B.Tech or M.E./M.Tech in Ocean Engineering, Mechanical, Aerospace, Applied Mechanics, Computational Engineering, or allied fields, with a strong academic record. Only Indian nationals may apply.

The notification then lists three desired qualifications, and these are the real filter:

  • Strong fundamentals in Finite Element Methods (FEM).
  • Hands-on experience writing sub-routines in ABAQUS.
  • Hands-on experience in CFRP composite laminate modelling, fracture models, and nonlinear buckling and collapse simulations in ABAQUS.

Read that list carefully before applying. The post is for one candidate, and the selection is by shortlisting followed by interview — so the CV does the first round of selection. If your B.Tech or M.Tech dissertation, internship or project work involved FEM analysis or ABAQUS composite modelling, put it on the first page of your application with specifics: what you modelled, which element types and failure criteria you used, and what the results showed. A generic degree certificate with no simulation work is unlikely to make a one-post shortlist, however good the marks are.

Age Limit and Relaxation

The age limit is not more than 35 years. The notification gives relaxation to OBC, SC, ST, PwD and women candidates as per Government of India norms, and mentions age relaxation for highly deserving candidates as well. The date for counting age is not specified in the notice — if your age is close to the limit, confirm the cut-off date with the Principal Investigator before applying.

Pay, Tenure and the Honest Picture

The fellowship pays Rs. 37,000 per month plus HRA in years 1 and 2, and Rs. 42,000 per month plus HRA in year 3. Hostel accommodation may be provided on a chargeable basis — in that case HRA will not be admissible.

The project runs for three years. The JRF is initially posted for six months, extendable on satisfactory performance and availability of funds. Be clear-eyed about the terms: the position is purely temporary and co-terminus with the project, and the notification states it is liable for termination with a 30-day notice period if performance is not deemed satisfactory. The selected candidate must join duty immediately upon receipt of the offer, and the university reserves the right to fill or not fill the post.

On the plus side, the notification states that the selected candidate will be given an opportunity to register for the Ph.D. programme at IMU in accordance with university norms, when IMU officially releases the Ph.D. admission notification. For someone planning a research career in ocean structures or composites, that pathway — plus a publication record from a MoPSW-funded deep-sea project — is the real long-term value of this fellowship.

How to Apply (Google Form, by 6 December)

There is no application portal and no downloadable application form. Fill in the Google form at the link given in the Important Links table below. The last date is 6 December 2026, and the notification says the date is extendable if desired applications are not received. The notification names no documents to attach and mentions no application fee — so do not pay anyone anything for this application, and check the official notification for any document requirements before submitting.

For queries, the notification gives the Principal Investigator’s contact: Dr. Tota Rakesh Kumar, +91-9989403950. Use that channel for genuine eligibility questions — for example, whether your allied-field degree qualifies, or what the age cut-off date is — rather than guessing and submitting a wrong application.

Selection: Shortlist, Then Interview

Only shortlisted candidates will be called for an interview as per IMU norms. Selected candidates will be intimated by e-mail for an offline or online interview. No TA/DA will be paid for the offline interview, and the decision of the selection committee will be final. The interview date is not specified in the notification. Since there is no written test mentioned, your application itself is the shortlisting document — make it specific to this project, not a generic CV.
