Chandigarh High Court Driver Vacancy 2026 – 25 Posts, Eligibility, Selection Process

Driving a judge to court is not the same as driving a taxi. The car is a government vehicle, the passenger upholds the law, and the driver becomes part of one of India’s most respected institutions. That is why this High Court’s driver recruitment always draws far more applications than seats — and why Employment Notice No. 04/DRV/HC/2026, with just 25 driver posts, became one of the year’s most discussed recruitments in the region.

The online application window closed on 18 September 2026. If you applied, your next milestone is the Practical Test-cum-Interview, whose date the High Court will announce on its official website.

The biggest trap sits in the licence clause: a valid LMV licence is mandatory, and no presumption of eligibility follows from any higher endorsement on the licence. An HMV endorsement does not prove you hold a valid LMV licence.

Eligibility Criteria

Educational Qualification

The candidate must be at least 10+2 pass, with Punjabi or Hindi as one of the subjects in the matriculation (Class 10) examination. Many applicants miss this: a 12th pass certificate alone is not enough without Punjabi or Hindi in Class 10. All eligibility conditions had to be fulfilled as on 18/09/2026.

Driving Licence

A valid Light Motor Vehicle (LMV) licence is compulsory. The notification warns that no presumption of LMV eligibility will be drawn merely because a higher category is endorsed on the licence.

Warning: an HMV-only licence with no valid LMV entry will not pass — the LMV endorsement is checked specifically at testimonials checking. Military-licence holders must also produce the prescribed-format certificate from the competent authority confirming it meets the notice requirements.

Driving Experience

Two years of car-driving experience is required, and it must be proved with an experience certificate produced at testimonials checking — self-declaration is not enough. The verification desk looks for a certificate on the employer’s letterhead stating the period and nature of driving work; drivers who never collected one suffer most here.

Clean Driving Record

The candidate must not have been convicted of any offence for negligent driving, and must submit an undertaking in the prescribed format declaring that no such conviction exists and no such proceeding is pending in any court or authority.

Age Limit and Relaxation

Age must be between 18 and 35 years as on 18/09/2026 for all categories. Ex-Servicemen get the upper age limit relaxed by their years of defence service plus three additional years.

Note: SC/ST/BC reservation and fee benefits apply only to candidates domiciled in Punjab, Haryana or Chandigarh. Applicants from other states are treated as General category, including for the fee.

Application Fee

Category Fee
General, and SC/ST/BC of areas other than Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh Rs. 1,000
SC/ST/BC of Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh Rs. 800
Ex-Servicemen Rs. 800

The fee was payable online only, strictly non-refundable, with transaction charges extra. BC candidates on the Rs. 800 slab also need a valid BC certificate plus a non-creamy-layer undertaking at testimonials checking.

Selection Process

Selection rests on performance in the Practical Test-cum-Interview — no written exam. The stages:

1. Shortlisting (if needed). With very large applicant numbers, the High Court may apply shortlisting criteria via public notice — meeting eligibility alone does not guarantee a call.

2. Practical Test-cum-Interview. Provisionally eligible candidates are called for the driving test and interview; date, time and venue appear on highcourtchd.gov.in, and admit cards are never sent by post.

3. Testimonials checking. Original licence, qualification certificates, experience certificate, caste certificate and the prescribed undertakings are verified.

4. Trial period. Candidates proposed for appointment first complete a High Court-fixed trial period on daily-wager rates approved by the Deputy Commissioner, Chandigarh; regular appointment follows only after successful completion.

Good to know: no TA/DA is paid for the test or document verification, and mobile phones, electronic devices, watches and jewellery are barred inside the venue.

Practical Test: What to Expect

No detailed syllabus is published, so treat any “exact marks distribution” on random sites with suspicion. Actual driving is assessed — vehicle control, reversing and parking, traffic-rule observance, road sense — plus basic upkeep questions: checking oil and coolant, changing a tyre, handling a breakdown while on duty.

The e-admit card goes up on the official website with email/SMS alerts — keep your registered contacts active and check spam. Paste the same uploaded photograph on the admit card, gazetted/self-attested; a mismatch means no entry.

How to Apply Online (For Reference)

The window is closed, but future High Court recruitments follow the same pattern. Applications went only through highcourtchd.gov.in — the notice warns against phishing sites collecting fees through fake links. Candidates needed a valid email ID and mobile number, online payment facility, a recent passport-size photo (under 30 days old, white background) and scanned signature. Every detail had to be filled carefully: submitted particulars were final, with no changes allowed, so rechecking before fee payment was essential, and a printed copy of the form was required at testimonials checking. Helplines: 8100091298 for technical issues and 0172-2717605 for advertisement queries (working days).

Documents Checklist

  • Printout of the online application form
  • 10+2 certificate and matriculation certificate (showing Punjabi/Hindi as a subject)
  • Date of birth proof
  • Valid LMV driving licence (original)
  • Experience certificate proving minimum 2 years of car driving
  • Caste certificate, if claiming reservation
  • Domicile proof of Punjab, Haryana or Chandigarh, if claiming SC/ST/BC benefits
  • BC non-creamy-layer undertaking in the prescribed format
  • NOC / forwarding letter from Head of Department, if in government service
  • Affidavit about close relatives working in the High Court or district courts of Punjab, Haryana or Chandigarh
  • Undertaking of no conviction for rash/negligent driving
  • Undertaking about previous employments, if any
  • Discharge book copy (Ex-Servicemen only)
  • Five copies of the photograph uploaded in the application form

Common Mistakes That Get Applications Rejected

  • Wrong fee slab. An SC candidate from UP or Rajasthan counts as General and must pay Rs. 1,000 — the Rs. 800 slab needs Punjab/Haryana/Chandigarh domicile.
  • Assuming HMV covers LMV. The notification explicitly rules this out.
  • Old or mismatched photograph. The photo must be under 30 days old, and the admit-card photo must match the uploaded one exactly.
  • BC certificate without the creamy-layer undertaking. Both the latest certificate and the declaration are mandatory.
  • Skipping the NOC. Regular government/semi-government/PSU/corporation/board employees need the forwarding letter in the prescribed format. Contract and adhoc staff must apply as non-departmental candidates.
  • Multiple applications. Only one per category is allowed; the latest counts if you submit more than one.
  • Changing mobile/email mid-process. All admit-card and result communication goes to the registered contacts.
  • Carrying a phone to the venue. Electronic devices are barred; candidates have been turned away for this.

Salary, Allowances and Posting

The notification quotes no fixed pay scale — pay and allowances follow the latest Punjab Government rules adopted by the High Court (basic pay plus dearness and applicable allowances). Duty hours may stretch beyond normal working hours, even odd hours. Drivers are posted at Chandigarh but may be sent to Delhi or any Punjab/Haryana district with no extra perks, and the initial trial period is paid at daily-wager rates approved by the Deputy Commissioner, Chandigarh.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. What was the last date to apply?
18 September 2026 (11:59 PM). The window is closed; the cut-off is sacrosanct and no late applications are accepted.

Q2. Is there a written exam?
No. Selection is through a Practical Test-cum-Interview; shortlisting criteria may be applied first if applications are very large.

Q4. How do I prove two years of driving experience?
With an experience certificate of at least two years of car driving, produced in original at testimonials checking — ideally on the employer’s letterhead.

Q5. Is the application fee refundable?
No. Once paid, the fee is not refunded, and transaction charges were extra.

Q6. When is the Practical Test-cum-Interview?
Not announced yet — it will be published on highcourtchd.gov.in with email/SMS alerts to registered candidates.

Q7. Where will selected drivers be posted?
Chandigarh, with liability to serve at Delhi or any district of Punjab and Haryana from time to time, without extra allowances.
