The wait is over. India Post has published the 1st merit list for the Gramin Dak Sevak (GDS) Online Engagement, Schedule-II, July 2026 cycle on 12 October 2026, and the circle-wise result PDFs are now live on the official portal. This cycle covers a massive 23,757 vacancies for Branch Postmaster (BPM), Assistant Branch Postmaster (ABPM) and Dak Sevak posts across all postal circles.
Before you rush to download the PDF, one thing to understand: this is not a conventional exam result. There is no roll number list generated from a written test. GDS selection works entirely on your Class 10 marks — the merit list is system-generated, and if your name appears, you move straight to document verification. This article explains how to check the list, what every column in the PDF means, what to do next if you are shortlisted, and the practical mistakes candidates make every single cycle.

About the application phase: This cycle ran under Notification No. 17-12/2026-GDS. One-time registration was open from 31 August to 19 September 2026, and online applications from 2 September to 21 September 2026. The application window is now closed — only the merit list and document verification remain.
No Exam, No Roll Number, No Cut-Off — How GDS Selection Actually Works
Most candidates approaching the GDS result for the first time look for the same things they would in an SSC or railway result: a cut-off table and a roll number search. The GDS process works differently, and understanding it saves a lot of confusion.
There is no written exam and no interview. Your application details — mainly your Class 10 marks — are fed into the system, which aggregates them and converts them into a percentage carried up to four decimal places. The system then generates merit lists circle by circle, division by division, post by post. If your percentage is higher than the other applicants for that specific post, your name appears in the list.
There is no published cut-off. Because shortlisting happens separately for every combination of circle, division, post and community category, the “last selected” percentage varies everywhere. A UR candidate selected for a BPM post in one division may have 98%, while an ABPM post in another division may close at 82%. The only honest way to know the cut-off for your post is to open your circle’s PDF and look at the marks of the shortlisted candidates.
The percentages can look brutally high. In the verified Uttar Pradesh circle List 1 PDF, a striking number of shortlisted candidates show 100% marks. That is normal for GDS — this recruitment attracts lakhs of high-scoring 10th-pass candidates, and there is no exam to separate them. If your own marks were modest, the 1st list is genuinely hard to crack — but it is not the end of the story, as explained below.
How to Check the India Post GDS 1st Merit List 2026
The result is released as circle-wise PDFs — one list per postal circle. Follow these steps:
- Open the official GDS online engagement portal at indiapostgdsonline.gov.in.
- Look for the link related to the July 2026 / Schedule-II shortlisted candidates (merit) list. The exact label on the portal can vary, so read it carefully.
- Select your postal circle (state) and download the PDF.
- Press Ctrl+F and search by your registration number.
Lost your registration number? You can search by your name instead — but do not stop there. Many candidates share similar names. Confirm the match using the post name, division and marks shown against it. The registration number from your application form is the only unambiguous identifier.
Do not open the wrong cycle’s list. The portal also carries the January 2026 cycle’s lists. Make sure you are looking at the Schedule-II, July 2026 list — the header of the official PDF says it clearly, e.g. “GDS Online Engagement Schedule-II, July-2026”.
Reading the PDF: What Each Column Means
The official list is a large table. Here is what each column tells you, based on the verified circle PDFs:
| Column | What it means |
|---|---|
| Office / Division | The division and branch office where the vacancy sits — this is where your job and your document verification are located |
| Post ID | The unique ID of the vacancy you were shortlisted against |
| Post Name | BPM, ABPM or Dak Sevak (BO = Branch Office, SO = Sub Office) |
| Post Community | The category the post was filled under (UR, OBC, SC, ST, EWS, PWD-A, etc.) |
| Registration Number | Your application registration number — the surest way to confirm the entry is yours |
| % of Marks | Your Class 10 aggregate percentage, shown up to four decimal places |
Along with the list, the PDF carries the document verification instructions and deadline. In the Uttar Pradesh circle’s List 1, shortlisted candidates are instructed to get their documents verified at the Divisional Office of the division they are selected in, on or before 27/10/2026, reporting with originals and two sets of photocopies. Deadlines can differ by circle — always go by what your own circle’s PDF says, not by someone else’s screenshot.
Shortlisted? Here Is What Happens Next
Being in the merit list does not mean you have the job yet. You are shortlisted for document verification, which happens before provisional engagement. Here is the practical sequence:
- Download and save your circle’s PDF. It is your proof of shortlisting — keep a copy.
- Read the verification instructions in the PDF. Note the deadline and the exact office you must report to.
- Gather originals plus photocopies. Class 10 marksheet and certificate, caste/community certificate (SC/ST/OBC/EWS as applicable), and other documents named in the instructions.
- Report within the stated date to the authority named against your name.
Two warnings that matter. First, never pay anyone for selection. GDS shortlisting is system-generated — anyone asking for money to “confirm” your name is running a scam; use only the official portal. Second, carry originals to verification — photocopies alone will not do.
If you are in Haryana and need to travel to your divisional office for document verification, you can look up bus timings for your district on haryanabustime.com before you plan the trip.
Not in the 1st List? Do Not Panic — But Be Realistic
Missing the first list is not the end of the story. India Post releases merit lists in rounds as vacancies remain unfilled. In the 2023 Schedule-II cycle, for example, four merit lists were released. However — and this is important — no second-list date has been announced for the 2026 cycle, and there is no guarantee of how many lists will come out.
The honest approach: keep checking the official portal periodically, keep your documents ready, and in the meantime do not put other plans on hold. If your 10th percentage was below the 90s, treat a later list as a possibility, not a certainty.
What selected GDS earn: GDS are paid a Time Related Continuity Allowance (TRCA) rather than a regular government salary — BPM: Rs. 12,000 to Rs. 29,380, ABPM/Dak Sevak: Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 24,470, with an annual 3% increase and Dearness Allowance applicable, as per the official recruitment notification.
