The Punjab and Haryana High Court has opened one of the biggest court-staff recruitments of the year. The Society for Centralized Recruitment of Staff in Subordinate Courts (S.S.S.C.) — the body that hires for the subordinate courts under the High Court — has announced 1,270 Clerk posts across the District Courts of Punjab, and the online application window opens on 7 October 2026 at 4:00 PM.

If you are a graduate eyeing a stable government desk job in Punjab, this is a notification worth reading end to end. The vacancy count alone makes it stand out: most high court clerk notifications of recent years have carried a few hundred posts at best. Here is everything verified from Employment Notice No. 37C/SSSC/PB/2026 (dated 3 October 2026).

Quick read: Online applications run from 7 October 2026 (4:00 PM) to 4 November 2026 (4:00 PM) on sssc.gov.in. Graduates with Matriculation in Punjabi can apply. Selection is a 100-mark online written exam, then a qualifying computer test — the final merit list depends only on written-exam marks.

Vacancy Details

A total of 1,270 Clerk posts are to be filled. The notification carries an explicit warning: the number may go up or down without notice, depending on vacancies on the date the merit list is prepared. Vacancies are spread across the usual vertical categories — Unreserved, EWS, Scheduled Castes (Balmikis/Mazhbi Sikhs and Others) of Punjab, Backward Classes of Punjab, Freedom Fighter, Sportsman, Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD), and Ex-Servicemen of Punjab.

Read this carefully before you count seats: reservation for Sportsman, PwBD, and Ex-Servicemen of Punjab is horizontal, not vertical — meaning these candidates are drawn from within the UR/EWS/SC/BC categories rather than adding separate extra seats. Given the nested roster, treat any category-wise breakup seen on third-party sites as indicative and verify the exact figures from the official notification PDF on sssc.gov.in before applying.

Another point that trips up applicants every year: reservation benefits, age relaxation, and fee concessions are available only to bonafide residents of Punjab (with a limited exception for age relaxation of government employees). If you belong to a reserved category of another state, you must apply under the Unreserved (General) category.

Eligibility Criteria

The bar is straightforward and fixed as on the closing date of the online application form:

  • Education: Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree (or equivalent) from a recognised university.
  • Punjabi requirement: Must have passed the Matriculation examination with Punjabi as one of the subjects. This catches out otherwise-eligible graduates from other states — if you did not study Punjabi in Class 10, you are not eligible.
  • Computer proficiency: Must be proficient in operating computers (this is later tested through the Computer Proficiency Test).
Disqualification clause: A person who has married someone having a living spouse, or who has remarried while their own spouse is living, is ineligible for appointment — unless the Hon’ble High Court is satisfied the marriage is permissible under the applicable personal law.

Age Limit (as on 1 January 2026)

Category Minimum age Maximum age Relaxation
Unreserved (UR)/General 18 years 37 years —
SC of Punjab 18 years 37 years 5 years
BC/OBC of Punjab 18 years 37 years 5 years
PwBD of Punjab 18 years 37 years 10 years
Ex-Servicemen of Punjab 18 years No fixed upper limit stated; relaxation = military service rendered + 3 years
In-service employees (Punjab/Haryana govt., other state govts., Govt. of India, High Court, Subordinate Courts, UT Chandigarh) 18 years 45 years —

Note the unusually generous ceiling: most clerk recruitments cap the general category at 30 or 35 years, while this one allows up to 37. If age shut you out of other clerk notifications, this one may still be open to you.

Application Fee

Category Fee
SC / BC / OBC / Ex-Servicemen / EWS of Punjab ₹710
PwBD of Punjab ₹875
All other categories ₹1,200

The fee is paid online through the application gateway (internet banking, debit card, credit card, or UPI) and is non-refundable. Your online application counts as submitted only after the payment succeeds.

Salary — What a Clerk Earns

The post carries Level-5 pay — ₹29,200 per month for graduates (for fresh recruitment/appointment on or after 17 July 2020, as adopted by the Hon’ble High Court of Punjab and Haryana for Subordinate Courts staff). Over and above this basic structure, the usual allowances for Punjab subordinate courts staff apply as per rules.

Selection Process

The selection runs in three stages, but only one of them decides your rank:

  1. Online written examination (100 marks) — Computer Based Test covering General Knowledge and English Composition.
  2. Computer Proficiency Test — qualifying in nature.
  3. Checking of original testimonials / interaction and document verification.
The part many aspirants misunderstand: the final merit list is based solely on written-exam marks. The Computer Proficiency Test only filters you in or out — it does not add to your score. So all of your preparation effort should go into the written paper’s GK and English Composition sections.

One unusual transparency feature: re-evaluation of answer sheets can be requested in writing within 30 days of the final result, on payment of ₹500 per answer sheet.

How to Apply Online

  1. Go to sssc.gov.in between 7 October 2026 (4:00 PM) and 4 November 2026 (4:00 PM) and look for “Clerk District Courts of Punjab”. No other mode of application is accepted.
  2. Fill the Registration form first, then the Application Form.
  3. Capture a real-time photograph using an inbuilt or attached webcam when the form asks for it. Separately, upload a scanned recent passport-size photograph (not more than one month old, white background) and your scanned signature.
  4. Enter all personal details — including category and sub-category — carefully. No change is permitted after submission.
  5. Pay the fee through the online gateway.
  6. Print the submitted application and keep 5 copies of the uploaded photograph for the later stages.
Do not treat the photograph casually. The notification requires that the real-time webcam photo, the uploaded scanned photo, and the photo pasted on the E-Admit Card all match — and your face at the exam centre must match them too. Any mismatch means you will not be allowed inside the examination centre. Use a recent, clear photograph taken against a white background for every stage.

Common Mistakes That Get Applications Rejected

  • Applying in the wrong category: Reserved-category candidates from other states must apply as General. Applying under a Punjab reserved category without bonafide Punjab residence wastes your fee.
  • Multiple applications: You can submit only one application for a particular category. If you submit more than one, only the latest is considered — earlier fee payments are not refunded.
  • Missing the Punjabi condition: Graduates from outside Punjab often overlook the “Matriculation with Punjabi” requirement. Check your Class 10 marksheet before you pay.
  • Wrong photo practice: Using an old or mismatched photograph is a direct entry-denial risk, as explained above.
  • Last-day rush: The window closes at 4:00 PM sharp on 4 November 2026, not midnight. Apply at least a few days early.
